Contemporary art in Palma
In the heart of Palma's old town, art will take on new forms in unexpected settings. This autumn, Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden will present a selection of curated sculptures and paintings from the Cansalas Gallery & Art House. Visitors are invited to experience contemporary art in the unique setting of a 16^(th)-century Mallorcan house.
Until the end of the year, works by María Isabel Ballester and Ángel Baldovino will be on display throughout the hotel, where they will sit alongside historic architecture, traditional courtyards and lush gardens. This collaboration brings together two of Palma's most notable cultural venues, which are located just a five-minute walk apart and offer a fresh perspective on the city's art scene.
Sculptures woven into the experience
María Isabel Ballester's sculptures are located throughout Can Bordoy, forming part of the journey through the building while retaining their artistic integrity.
In the Mallorcan courtyard at the entrance, Clara, a quartz sculpture depicting a ballerina, welcomes guests with her delicate, serene silhouette. This creates a subtle contrast with the courtyard’s traditional architecture. The outdoor spaces feature Figura con toro, a striking bronze sculpture.
The selection also includes Gabrielle, a piece that combines sculpture and painting. It was created in collaboration with Ann Wikström Mogliani, founder of Cansalas Gallery & Art House. Located in the distinctive Sala Jumanji, Gabrielle builds upon the creative dialogue explored in Pas de Deux, an artistic project undertaken by both artists.
Each piece offers a unique perspective, ensuring that experiencing art is an integral part of exploring Can Bordoy.
The colourful world of Ángel Baldovino
The history of Can Bordoy is closely linked to the social and cultural life of Palma. The spirit of gathering and exchange forms an integral part of the house’s identity, and art plays a pivotal role in this.
Ángel Baldovino’s paintings are particularly well suited to this atmosphere. Born in Buenos Aires in 1929, Baldovino has lived in Mallorca since 1977, developing a distinctive visual language in which colour and imagination take centre stage.
Three of his works — Gran fiesta del color, Naturaleza viva and Mi reino de los sueños — are featured in the exhibition. Their vibrant tones and evocative compositions breathe new life into the hotel’s interiors, particularly in the bar, where they provide an intriguing contrast to the building's architecture and character.
This interplay encourages visitors to view the interiors from a different perspective, inviting them to notice the details, forms, and connections that emerge between the artworks and their surroundings.
An art trail in the heart of Palma
The exhibition also gives visitors the opportunity to explore the Cansalas Gallery & Art House, located just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel in Palma's Soho district. Founded by Ann Wikström Mogliani, this 16^(th)-century gallery comprises a series of spaces dedicated to art exhibitions and creative expression.
Visiting both locations enables you to follow a short cultural trail through Palma. First, view the artworks at the gallery, then head to Can Bordoy to see how they take on new meaning in a historic setting.
This autumn, experience contemporary art in a different way in Palma. Explore the hotel's courtyards and gardens and experience artworks presented by the gallery in a setting where history, architecture and contemporary creativity converge.
